چکیده

We argue that the gas giants Jupiter and Saturn were both formed with their rotation axes nearly perpendicular to their orbital planes, and that the large current tilt of the ringed planet was acquired in a post-formation event. We identify the responsible mechanism as trapping into a secular spin-orbit resonance that couples the angular momentum of Saturn’s rotation to that of Neptune’s orbit. Strong support for this model comes from (1) a nearmatch between the precession frequencies of Saturn’s pole and the orbital pole of Neptune, and (2) the current directions that these poles point in space. We show, with direct numerical integrations, that trapping into the spinorbit resonance and the associated growth in Saturn’s obliquity are not disrupted by other planetary perturbations.

Tilting Saturn. I. Analytic Model

The tilt of Saturn’s spin axis to its orbit plane is 26N7, while that of Jupiter is only 3N1. We offer an explanation for this puzzling difference owing to gravitational perturbations of Saturn by the planet Neptune. A similarity between the precession period of Saturn’s spin axis and the 1:87 ; 10 yr precession period of Neptune’s slightly inclined orbit plane implicates a resonant interaction...

A Study on the Characteristics for the Ground Vibration Due to the Travelling Tilting Train

The development of the tilting train can contribute to solve the economic burden and enhance the transportation means of areas that did not share the benefits of the high speed railway. But the dynamic behavior caused by the interaction between the train and the track as well as the environmental vibrations along the railway should be evaluated to secure the safety of the train and riding comfo...

A Study on the Characteristics and the Effective Reduction Methods for the Ground Vibration Due to the Travelling Tilting Train

In this paper, a study on the characteristics and the reduction methods of ground vibration due to the tilting train travelling in the conventional line is carried out. The load transmitted into the ground is computed considering the interaction between the tilting car and the line. This load is then applied in the numerical model for the analysis of ground vibration due to the travelling tilti...

SATURN TROJANS: STABILITY REGIONS IN THE PHASE SPACE F. Marzari and P. Tricarico

We use the frequency map analysis method to identify for Trojan orbits of Saturn the regions in the proper orbital element phase space characterized by higher stability. We find that Trojan orbits with proper eccentricity around 0.05, libration amplitude of about 80 , and inclination lower than 15 show a slow diffusion in the proper frequency of the longitude of perihelion ~ !, which indicates ...

Titan in subsonic and supersonic flow

[1] The Titan-Saturn plasma interaction is studied using a global numerical kinetic model. The developed selfconsistent three-dimensional quasi-neutral hybrid model is used to study Titan’s interaction with supersonic and subsonic plasma flow. The subsonic flow case represents Titan in the Kronian magnetosphere during the Voyager-1 flyby. The supersonic and weakly supermagnetosonic flow cases a...
